Well... today is our first day in Guatemala. All of the flights went great, all of our luggage arrived safely, and everyone is seeming to be feeling okay. We had fun in the Dallas airport... shopping around, eating in Fuddrucker's, riding the tram that travelled around the airport. Lots of fun. But, I know that everyone was exhausted last night.
Yesterday, after we walked though the guard-patrolled airport, we met our new friends, Les Peters and his "hermano"(brother in Christ) Eric. Eric is one of the van drivers. He speaks only very little English. I am in his van, along with 7 team members... this makes for interesting conversation. I am quickly picking up some phrases. I'm glad that I knew a few questions to ask... I was able to find out about the cathedral and the National Palace (and who lived in the palace too!). Today, we are going to be touring around Guatemala City, before driving for 6 hours up the mountain to Tactic. I'm so excited to find out about their history and about religion down here.
Our restaurant of choice, so far, is called Pollo Campero (which means, Country Chicken). Scott McLaren told me about this place! It's so good! In my opinion, it beats out McDonald's by far! We were at Pollo for supper last night, and again this morning for breakfast. (I'm actually writing in the restaurant... they have wireless internet here, which Les says is very rare.)
Last night, we stayed in a seminary. It was a beautiful place... but we all realized it was even more beautiful when we woke up this morning. We woke up to the sound of fireworks (they set off fireworks, every time it's someone's birthday), and the sound of birds, roosters, horses and other interesting sounds. This is just a taste of things to come! The kids seem to be adjusting well. Yesterday on the plane, I think a few were a little surprised at all the Spanish they were hearing. We are suddenly the minority, and it may take some getting used to.
That's it for now! I hope everything is going well in Regina... I'm ready to eat some yummy breakfast, here at Pollo Campero! Adios!
